SPE2025 - XXVI Meeting of the Portuguese Electrochemical Society

The XXVI Meeting of the Portuguese Electrochemical Society took place at the Departamento de Engenharia Química - Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, from November 19 to November 21, 2025.

As in previous editions, the meeting aimed to foster a discussion forum on the developments, achievements and prospects in all fields of Electrochemistry.

Inserted in the activities of the Portuguese Electrochemical Society, SPE, which has a long-standing tradition in the organization of these meetings, the XXVI Meeting of the Portuguese Electrochemical Society intended to boost and strengthen partnerships and networks between academia, technology transfer centers and industry, highlighting the importance of Electrochemistry in the development of an innovative and sustainable future.

The program included several Invited Lectures by leading experts in different fields of Electrochemistry.

Prof. Armando J. L. Pombeiro has been awarded the "Prix Franco-Portugais" by the French Chemical Society

Prof. Armando J. L. Pombeiro has been awarded the Luso-French Prize (French-Portuguese Prix), awarded for the first time by the French Chemistry Society - for his remarkable work in the synthesis of multinuclear catalysts based on metallic complexes used in processes of industrial interest, and by the strong ties established with the French chemists.

The ceremony was held on May 16, 2019 at the Maison de La Chimie in Paris.

Element Scarcity - EuChemS Periodic Table

The smartphone you may be using right now to look at this unique Periodic Table is made up of some 30 elements – over half of which may give cause for concern in the years to come because of increasing scarcity. The issue of element scarcity cannot be stressed enough. With some 10 million smartphones being discarded or replaced every month in the European Union alone, we need to carefully look at our tendencies to waste and improperly recycle such items. Unless solutions are provided, we risk seeing many of the natural elements that make up the world around us run out – whether because of limited supplies, their location in conflict areas, or our incapacity to fully recycle them.

Protecting endangered elements needs to be achieved on a number of levels. As individuals, we need to question whether upgrades to our phones and other electronic devices are truly necessary, and we need to make sure that we recycle correctly to avoid old electronics don’t end up in landfill sites or polluting the environment. On a political level, we need to see a greater recognition of the risk element scarcity poses, and moves need to be made to support better recycling practices and an efficient circular economy. Moreover, transparency and ethical issues need to be considered to avoid the abuse of human rights, as well as to allow citizens to make informed choices when purchasing smartphones or other electronics – as many of the elements we require in our electronics are imported from conflict zones.

2019 has been pronounced the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT2019), and EuChemS, the European Chemical Society, hopes that this unique and thought-provoking Periodic Table will lead to reflection and ultimately, action. Over the next year, we will provide featured articles on specific elements, their endangered status, and the consequences this will have on the world around us.

Video contest Chemistry Rediscovered (Second edition)

The 2^nd edition of the video contest Chemistry Rediscovered, which is organized by EYCN and will be held in honor of the International Year of the Periodic Table in 2019, is going to start!

The theme of this year is In your element. For this competition, young chemists (12-35 years old) are challenged to make a creative 90 seconds video related to one or more elements of the periodic table.

The competition will be launched October 1^st and videos can be submitted until the 31^st of January 2019.

All participants of the competition will receive a copy of the EuChemS Periodic Table, specially designed on the occasion of the International Year of the Periodic Table in 2019. In addition to that, they have a chance to win other Periodic Table related goodies and the overall winner(s) will be invited to Paris in July 2019, for the 47^thIUPAC congress.

First Workshop on Electrochemistry Devices: (bio)sensors

The First Workshop on Electrochemistry Devices: (bio)sensors took place on the 13^th and 14^th of October 2016 in the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP, Porto, Portugal) and was organized by the Environmental Chemistry and Health research group from LAQV-REQUIMTE (Rede de Química e Tecnologia).

The workshop included scientific and technical presentations from several different perspectives, covering areas such as electrochemical (bio)sensors, electrocatalysis and applied electroanalysis, that were presented by well-known experts in these fields.

The workshop also included practical sessions in which the participants prepared and applied different (bio)sensors. Besides this, flash and poster presentations were also included for participants who were interested in presenting their research in the electrochemical field.

A group of about 50 participants joined to discuss current electrochemical challenges, leading to a fruitful and scientifically interesting meeting during two long and labour-intensive days."

"Agente ao serviço da promoção da Eletroquímica"

Cientista da Universidade de Coimbra distinguido pela Academia de Ciências Russa

O professor Victor Lobo, Catedrático do Departamento de Química da Universidade de Coimbra (UC), acaba de ser distinguido pela Academia de Ciências Russa com a Medalha Professor Nicolai M. Emanuel. «É uma honra receber tão importante distinção», comenta o cientista que, desde a década de 1980, colabora com aquela instituição científica. Uma cooperação que teve início, recorda o professor, «quando a então Academia de Ciências da União Soviética me contactou para resolver um problema de difusão de polímeros».

Doutorado pela Universidade de Cambridge, Victor Lobo desenvolveu uma nova célula (aparelhagem) de difusão isotérmica, que lhe valeu uma medalha de ouro na "XV Exposição Internacional de Invenções e Novas Técnicas", realizada em Genebra, Suíça, em 1987. Um invento com aplicação prática, por exemplo, no desenvolvimento de novas baterias para automóveis elétricos, em estudos de corrosão e no tratamento de águas residuais.

Com mais de 150 artigos científicos publicados em revistas internacionais de referência, o cientista da UC tem sido membro de diversas sociedades científicas e investigador / professor convidado em diversas universidades, entre as quais a Universidade de Canberra (Austrália), Universidade de East Anglia (Reino Unido) e Universidade de Göttingen (Alemanha).

Dos vários livros publicados, destaca-se “Handbook of Electrolyte Solutions”, uma obra com cerca de 2.500 páginas, muito divulgada no mundo inteiro, publicada pela editora internacional Elsevier. O Catedrático da UC tem também sido voz ativa na defesa da melhoria do ensino em Portugal, nomeadamente junto de grupos de deputados na Assembleia da República e no Conselho Nacional da Educação, do qual foi membro.
